Commentary: The Mouth of Truth is an ancient marble mask pavonazzetto, placed on the wall of the pronaos of the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedinen Rome in 1632.
The sculpture, dating back to the 1,75st century, has a diameter of 1,75 meters and represents a male bearded face in which the eyes, nose and mouth are pierced and hollow.[1]
Nor is there certainty about its ancient usefulness: whether it was a source, the water output from a compluvium or even a sewer (hypothesis emerged from its closeness to the Maximum Cloaca).
Instead, the mask is known to enjoy ancient and legendary fame: it is presumed to be the object mentioned in the th century in the Mirabilia Urbis Romae, where it is read:
′′ Next to the church of Santa Maria de la Fontana, lies the temple of Faunus, this image spoke to Julian, the Emperor known as the Apostate and deceived him."
A the century German text describes in detail how, from behind the mouth, the devil - self-calling himself Mercury (god of trade, but also of the embroils) long held Julian the Apostate's hand (who had deceived a woman) And before that idol he had to swear his good faith), vowing to wash his reputation and a great fortune if he returned to the ancient splendor of paganism.
Hence the popular belief that says that this curious and enormous marble mask is capable of knowing whether people tell the truth or not, it is necessary to introduce their hand into their mouth and to those who tell lies... rips a bite hand in hand.
